Upon passing the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) and Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS) exams, and meeting the education and experience requirements, the applicant will then apply to the North Carolina Board to be seated for the North Carolina State Specific Exam. After passing this exam your license will be issued.
The North Carolina State Specific Exam tests an applicant’s knowledge of the laws, procedures and practices pertaining to land surveying in North Carolina. This is an open book exam administered at the Board office. Applicants may bring bound reference materials and a calculator as approved by NCEES (Approved Calculators). The state exam is administered four times a year:

A person who failed an examination may apply to take the examination again at the next regularly scheduled examination period by making written request and submitting the required exam fee. A person having a record of three or more failures shall demonstrate to the Board that actions, such as additional courses of study, have been taken to improve the applicant’s chances for passing the exam.
An applicant may make a written request, before the application deadline, for reasonable accommodation for the exam. Reasonable accommodation shall be granted based upon meeting the Guidelines for Requesting Religious and ADA Accommodations published by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).
